Artist's Description
People on the Map
In my latest series I am exploring sculpture, mounted on bases that have been collaged with maps. Humans rely on furniture every day of their life and on maps when they travel. Rarely do these two incongruent things come together. Either we are home using our furniture or we are out traveling using maps. The map wrapped structures are metaphors for the things we make, live near, and use every day. They are curiously built yet recognizable as furniture with the juxtaposition of the figures. Maps are flat, yet these are wrapped around symmetrical shapes and become three dimensional. Surfaces on maps document natural and manmade terrain including roads. In an effort to bring more natural things into our man made world I have build these sculptures and covered them with maps. Mechanically punctuated atop these strange geometric map covered structures are wire figures. Humans represented as strange oddly shaped wire figures. The figures are symbolic of me and the persona I like, strong and solid. These figures are a dramatic exaggeration of what we actually are and seem oblivious to how they look.
When I am making art I like to understand it and know why I am compelled to make it. What I make speaks from and of me, to fill the void in the world. It becomes something special and can make a difference in a society that we need to stand out in.
The only way to realize what we have in our lives is to love and be happy with ourselves.
